Matt McCall’s struggles to reintegrate into civilian life have been an ongoing battle for the better part of two years. Daily group sessions and weekly one-on-ones have only allowed him to grow so far. Twice he’s returned to his home state of Indiana and twice, he retreated to Mike’s Place. Uncertain of where he belongs in the world, he silently battles depression. The unexpected gift of Jethro, a black Labrador Retriever, perks his spirit…and a chance meeting in the park gives him a precious gift…

Aspiring country singer, Naomi Sparks, comes from a long line of Marines, so she knows all about sacrifice and struggle. When her Congressman brother asks her to visit Mike’s Place on his behalf, she discovers a real opportunity to make a difference. And meeting former Marine Matt McCall inspires her with the real challenge of discovering love and daring heroes who take risks. Writing music has never been so sweet….

Can one woman who believes in him really heal the wounds in this Marine’s heart?

I am completely biased with this review and wanted to disclose that immediately. I have wanted Matt's story for a while. Many times I told Heather that Matt had many different stories playing out in my head and I wanted to see how she did it. She didn't disappoint either. As a matter of fact, the morning that I finish this story, I sent Heather these messages on Facebook (condensed to one message):

So I tried really hard to finish last night, but I made it 62 percent through and finished this morning. You know my love for Matt and I think this story was absolutely PERFECT!! I was sobbing reading the first chapter though. I always told you that it would take the right woman to knock Matt on his ass and Naomi was perfect! I am biased of course because Matt has been in my head for so long, but I think it was down right amazing. Jethro though.............way too perfect.

Those messages are still how I feel. I truly believe that this story was PERFECT for Matt. We were introduced to Matt in Tell It to the Marine (Always a Marine 3) and Matt has appeared in a few other books, so Matt stayed with me. I believe that Matt stayed with me because of my career choice to become a Social Worker that truly wants to work with Veterans.

Matt returns to Mike's Place after he returned home to his family and couldn't handle it. He returned to get the help and James realized that Matt was finally ready to begin dealing with his trauma and begin to heal. The opening chapter had me sobbing huge tears and I almost put it down because I didn't want to read what could have happened. I didn't because I knew that Heather could have done that a while ago and wouldn't torture us like that.

Naomi comes to Mike's Place on her brother's behalf. She is a musician that is preparing to record an album and finds herself on the path that Matt takes when he is running/walking. When Matt and Naomi cross paths, she is writing songs for her album and captures Matt's attention. Naomi comes from a family of Marines and she begins to pick up on things that Matt is experiencing.

We meet a very special character in this story that we haven't met before. Jethro is our newest character and probably the cutest and quietest. You see, Jethro is Matt's service dog. Matt doesn't realize for a bit that Jethro is really his and not watching over him for someone else. James told Matt when he finally asked him about Jethro that he wasn't ready to hear it and accept it.

We see Matt make so much progress in this story and while Naomi was part of it, Matt was able to recognize things that he needed to work on himself and did it. I love a few things that Matt did on his own and stood by his decision.

What Part of Marine Don't You Understand? Always a Marine series Book 12 edition by Heather Long Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is my first book by this author. It dealt with the very real issues concerning PTSD. I really enjoyed this book.

So why not a 4 or 5 star review. Well, first of all we don't really hear the whole story of Matt's trauma in Iraq. Then there is the fact that Naomi has already gone through her brother's PTSD and does not share it with Matt. Do not know why. Couple falls in love after only a few days. Then it seems that just as their struggles are beginning , poof! It's time for an Epilogue. So although I liked the storyline and both characters, the plot was not fleshed out enough for me. Left me unsatisfied.
This was a fun and good read. I love how Ms. Long keeps me turning the pages of her books. I would tell anyone if you want a good and fun read that pulls at the heart strings. Read Heather Long.
This was a short easy read packed with emotion. I love books about the exceptional people in our armed services and the people who love them. A true love story with people who face their fears and work hard for their happy ending. This book leaves you with a warm feeling inside and a smile on your face.
Finally, we have Matt's story and it was well worth the wait. My only problem is, about half way through, my iPad quit on me because I was so into the story that I forgot to plug it into the charger!

I have loved every story in this series, and this one is so well written. Ms. Long chose the perfect mate for Matt in Naomi, who's surrounded by Marines within her own family, with an older brother who also suffered from PSTD.

Thank you for another wonderful story, and keep them coming!
I was so happy to get my hands on Matt’s story. He had been pulling on my heart strings since James’s book. The sexy Marine had a lot of healing to do – a lot to overcome. I loved his fight and the hard work he put in towards his recovery. He was very honest about where he was at and that endeared him to me more.

I also loved the support and unconditional acceptance he got from Naomi. She was a good heroine – very likeable. Their romance was sweet. Had me grinning like a schoolgirl. I’m very happy they found their HEA.

I’m hoping we get to see more of Matt as he continues to heal, and equally hoping to see the Sparks men featured in their own books.
OMG, this series is amazing !! Deep characters, interesting plots, and hot sex make these tales worthwhile. They are heartwarming, emotional, compassionate, loving, accepting, and engrossing. Matt has PTSD and a service dog. Naomi is the sister to a Congressman who needs a favor. She goes to Mike's Place in Dallas, and meets Matt, who's in therapy there. She's from a family of Marines, a singer/songwriter, and likes Matt right away. Their romance is a wonderful tale. You will not want to put this down. Each book is as good as the last, and different, too. You can't go wrong ! Highly recommend !! ENJOY !!
