He graduated from UCSC with a B.A. in Environmental Studies in 2013, but wanted to use selections from his photo collection to create a resource for the UCSC community. By giving back, Benny has created a field guide that shares his passion for birds and hopefully will ignite in others their own lasting joy in the great outdoors.

As an avid birder myself I found this guide invaluable! The lively narrative coupled with the fine photography make this book a must for California birders and naturalists.
What a resource! This book is chock full of great information along with beautiful photos accompanying the descriptions. Jacobs-Schwartz brings an obvious love of the subject to his expertly drawn descriptions. I heartily recommend this to anyone looking for an enlightening look at these regional birds. I received this as a gift, and I'm ordering a few to give as gifts for the holidays!

Helpful guide to identifying local birds.
As a recreational birder, I especially appreciated the Campus Hotspots and Fun Facts section on each posting.
Not an encyclopedic undertaking, (there are plenty of those available), but instead a very personal and user friendly, anecdotal guide
for the recreational or novice birder. Enough information to make it interesting, but leaving you thirsty for more. Makes you wanna
get out there and see them all for yourself.
This is a great field guide for dedicated bird watchers and novices alike. It tells you what you need to know to identify birds you see on the UC Santa Cruz campus and elsewhere in the Santa Cruz area. Rather than small print and cross references, each bird has a page with a photo, its approximate size (Robin-size, Sparrow-size, etc), where on campus you're likely to see it, and a Fun Fact — something really interesting about the bird's natural history or behavior. A table that shows what the types of beak indicates about birds' diets and thus where they forage is a great feature for those just learning to identify birds.
Besides being a great field reference for the Santa Cruz area, this book provides a great model for people interested in developing other "friendly" local guides to flora and fauna.
