Three 60-year old Los Angeles BFFs suddenly find themselves husbandless, homeless, and broke. What will they do now? Fifi, a formerly filthy rich Beverly Hills housewife, Olive, a new age “old maid” book-worm journalist whose career has tanked, and Lily, a stuck-in-the-sixties hippie herbalist (who has been sprung from jail on a bogus arrest) do what any women in their situations would do. They cry their eyes out. That out of the way, they accidentally formulate a wonder cream that erases the nasty under eye bags from their crying jag. It just so happens that the cream contains the active ingredient, CBD, from marijuana. Never mind—the cream is miraculous. They’ll market their naturally beautiful eye cream and make millions! But luck being against them, when it goes viral that the anti-drug DA candidate was the accidental first customer to use the weed-based cream, and the women become fugitives.

Interesting book. It was a slow start, but once you got to about Chapter 3 or 4, it got really interesting. I liked that the book was about older women, and the problems they encounter. I received this book for free from Reading Deals so I could leave an honest review. Can't wait to read another book from Nancy deville

On the Run in Beverly Hills edition by Nancy Deville Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

For me, this book was a mixed bag so here is a whistle stop tour of the positives and negatives, according to lil' ol' me.

Negatives
* It just wasn't as funny as I'd hoped. I was expecting a 'Nancy Meyers' style book with some great humour mixed in with the touching human aspect, and although some bits were amusing I don't think I laughed out loud once.
* The characters were good but sometimes they did things - major plot changing level things - that just didn't seem to sit with the character or with human nature. (Spoiler alert) OK, people get major life changing news but most people don't have random sex with strangers because of it and the situation with the oppressed and abused housewife suddenly running the show full of confidence...I loved the way that she took back control of her life, but her husband's body was hardly cold before she metamophasised into this go-getter. People need TIME and the plotline didn't allow for that. I also, more importantly, felt it trivialised her previous situation.
* There are swear words, sex scenes, and the obvious presentation of weed being a wonder drug that should be legalised for various purposes throughout the book. Maybe not a book to lend to your grandma.

Positives
(Because I don't like being negative about someone's hard work!)
* It was a fun and easy read with a satisfying ending.
* The characters journeyed and changed throughout the book but the solid relationship that the friends had lasted throughout. I loved that.
* 60 doesn't mean you're dead! These girls are gorgeous, vibrant, and moving forward - falling in love and making things happen. The nearest they come to being called a 'Golden Girl' was because of their accessories and tans.
* There are some well written scenes in the book. For me, the second half was better than the first. It also had a diverse cast of support characters, some you like and some you hate and some you're not quite sure of until the end.

Overall, a fun book.

"On the Run in Beverly Hills", written by Nancy Deville, is a fun contemporary story with mystery elements playing in Los Angeles, Santa Monica.

It is about the three BFFs, Francesca, Oliva and Lily Bartel, three fit, attractive women in their best years, connected back in their college days. Francesca, known as the princess or shortly Fify von Richmond with her blonde hair and member of Los Angeles' society; Olive or Oyl with her stunning shoulder-length hair and dark eyes who is writing magazine articles for the Rolling Stones, but whose financial situation had gotten out of control; and Lily, the eternal hippie with her girlish curves and who is a talented herbalist.

Life seems normal, but changes dramatically out of sudden Five police cars are surrounding Lily's cottage and have taken her to the police office for cultivation and possession for the sale of marijuana. Fify‘s husband Fred is dying of a heart attack after committing many years of domestic violence and abuse of his wife. And then Olive who lives in a townhouse on the Venice beach boardwalk for the last ten years and who thought she could live there her rest of her life. However the gigs had slowed down and Olive has fallen behind on her rent. Olive had less than a week to move out and her debts are 45,000 Dollars. Besides of that, like her mother and sister Olive has the BRCA1 mutation and so breast cancer. Her only chance a mastectomy and reconstruction of the breast tissue.

In the meanwhile Lily meets the Detective Brinkley, a black haired man wearing khakis and a tweed blazer, whose voice is deep but gentle who is interrogating her and she is felted for drugs. Her attorney Božena Silná, a Czech woman with vivid red hair explains to her that her husband was involved with growing and distributing marijuana and that also Frank Ryczek, a famous makeup artist and womanizer and his gay brother Leo who got liver cancer from Hep C are his associates. Lily’s husband also reveals her that Leo gave him a map of the Los Angeles National Forest and ten kilos of seeds that he should sell to raise money for the hospice. Leo was cultivating high cannabidol weed and because of its anti-inflammatory effect it can be used for sick people.

However, there is another grow, which is smaller and consists of 250 plants which have a worth of half a million dollars and which have even a higher CBD amount than the plants they used before. Besides that Lily’s cottage is burnt down and her garden is dug over. In addition, Fred got involved in bad deals the last seven years, so Fify has no money left and twenty-one million dollars belongs to the bank. Fify‘s only opportunity not to end up in poverty a garage sale.

What is Lily going to do about her health situation?
Is Fify going to be homeless?
And how can a mysterious cream solve all their problems?

Summary All in all, a splendid story with sympathetic characters and an amazing plot. Sometimes the length of the chapters was too long though, and unnecessary info added. The end also was a bit unbelievable, especially with Fify who judged people very harshly at the beginning and who reformed to be a peace-loving hippie afterwards. I like the intention of the author that she changed and the happy end, I only believe her change could be more gradually happen instead of almost instantly.

Kind regards,

What a great novel. The twists and turns keep you interested until the very end. This would make a great movie.
I loved it it was hard to put down. Love the way the BFFs stayed together thru everything. That is what true friendship is
Funny, sad, suspenseful, fulfilling. How these 3 complex women handled their life after each hit bottom. . How Deville developed these characters is amazing. It was full of surprises how they went from broke to riches.
On the Run in Beverly Hills is a fast paced adventure about three 60-year old characters..Lily, Fifi and Olivia. Although they have different personalities and social positions, the thread that holds them together is their unconditional friendship. While this is a fun read, especially if you have ever lived in LA, to me it is also about loyalty and strength.
This book was awesome! It showed what true friendship is. The three women are sixty and hilarious. It was a wonderful funny read.
